About Us

Inside Advanced Orthotic Designs Advanced Orthotic Designs Inc. (AOD) is a Canadian company that specializes in the design, development, fabrication, and fitting of complex orthopedic devices. AOD was established in the spring of 1997 by Greg Belbin C.O. (c) and operates four divisions:

  1. Pediatric and Adult Orthotic Devices
  2. Mobility Devices and Walkers
  3. Functional Electrical Stimulation
  4. Research and Development

Pediatric and Adult Orthotic Devices

The Pediatric and Adult Orthotic Division focuses on custom orthoses such as: hinged ankle foot orthoses (AFOs), rigid AFOs, knee ankle foot orthoses (KAFOs), sports injury devices ranging from complex custom knee braces for the professional athlete and weekend enthusiast, to ankle supports, soft garments, and custom foot orthotics. Many of our products are fabricated on-site in our state-of-the-art laboratory where quality control can be maintained at the highest level.

Mobility Devices and Walkers

Our Mobility Division developed the SMART Walker™ Orthosis and introduced it onto the market in 1999. The SMART Walker is sold throughout North America, Australia and Finland. While there are other similar devices available with various claims, the SMART Walker Orthosis is a significant improvement over these devices and is the culmination of related research, years of clinical experience and consumer feedback from caregivers, children, orthotists and therapists. This is not the effort of only one person but a design that puts many ideas and suggestions into practice.

Functional Electrical Stimulation

Functional Electrical Stimulation Orthoses, such as Walkaide and more recent the Bioness NESS L-300 are the new wave of orthotic technology utilizing a combination of electrical stimulation with contoured below knee orthotic cuff. Control units are programmed by the orthosist to able the client to relearn to walk and regain lost function due to stroke , MS , CP or other upper motor neuron disability.

Research and Development

Without ongoing research and development, new ideas and products, along with manufacturing techniques, cannot be realized. At AOD, our research is focused on improving current technology so as to maximize an individual's potential and enhancing their overall quality of life.
